Old Town San Diego Special Events
In celebration of an artillery unit whose leaders were Irish immigrants, a festive day has been set aside annually to enjoy Irish-Mexican Day. The military unit celebrated here was one of the most highly decorated fighting brigades of the Mexican Army during the Mexican-American War. At the yearly festivities, bagpipers parade and encircle Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and the Fiesta de Reyes Stage provides live entertainment for guests.
During the last half of December each year, several evenings of the week provide an opportunity for individuals and families to enjoy Bonfire Nights at the state park in Old Town San Diego. Performers and carolers provide entertainment, and free s'mores provide young and old with a reason to smile. The season is truly brighter around a bonfire.
Ladies Day in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is an annual event designed to celebrate the skills, talents, and creativity of women who helped found and establish San Diego in the 1800s. Participants are invited to don their festive hats of any time period. If their hats are representative of ones worn between 1821 to 1872, these ladies are welcome to enter a historic hat contest. Children and adults can partake in festivities that are educational as well as fun. Games, dancing, hair styling, and common crafts will be among the demonstrations and activities to enjoy. At the end of the day, it is hoped that every comer will walk away with a new appreciation for the strength and skills that were necessary to make home life successful in early San Diego.
December offers the opportunity for individuals and families to participate in a tradition that is centuries old. Las Posadas is celebrated to remember the journey that Mary and Joseph took through Bethlehem according to the Biblical record. This modern festivity has everything from children's choirs to pinata parties for the kids.
